Degree Requirements
Each concentration requires Principles of Biology (BIO 101), Principles of Biology Laboratory (BIO 103), and 30 hours of upper-division lecture and laboratory courses in Biology or Chemistry. Of these, 18 hours must be in biology and include Genetics (BIO 301), Cell Biology (BIO 360) and Cell and Molecular Biology Laboratory (BIO 362). Biology majors are required to take Calculus I (MTH 121) and Basic Statistics for the Sciences (MTH 163). Though not required, students are encouraged to choose upper division biology electives within one of the three concentrations. All science and mathematics courses must be passed with a grade of C- or higher. All prerequisite courses must be passed with a grade of C- or higher before taking a course for which they are prerequisites.
A minor in biology consists of 24 semester hours in biology including Genetics (BIO 301), Cell Biology (BIO 360), and Cell and Molecular Biology Laboratory (BIO 362). (Note: General and Organic Chemistry are prerequisites for many upper-division biology courses.)
In order to graduate with a Bachelor’s of Science degree students majoring in biology must pass a standardized comprehensive written examination and demonstrate speech competency by taking and passing Introduction to Public Speaking (CMM 150) or its equivalent.
