Conversation with Carolyn Haines

Carolyn Haines has recently published “The Darkling” under the pseudonym of R.B. Chesterton. This sharp and edgy gothic novel is set in 1974 Coden, Alabama. A young Californian family adopt a 16-year-old foster child and hire a tutor for their three children while restoring a shabby Paradise Inn to its former glory. During this time, claw marks begin appearing in the historic home and a ghost is seen in the woods.

Come join the Friends of Spring Hill College Library for light refreshments, lively conversation, and Carolyn’s book signing!

Library Adds Credo Reference to the Online Collection

Credo Reference is an easy-to-use tool for research projects and homework, and Burke Library has just added it to the collection. Search in hundreds of encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri, quotations, and subject-specific titles, as well as 200,000+ images and audio files, and nearly 100 videos.

Daniel Wilson, Access Services Specialist, Obtains MLIS Degree

On December 14, 2012, Burke Library Access Services Support Specialist, Daniel Wilson, received his Master’s of Library and Information Science from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.

Gentry Holbert and Janie Mathews publish an article in Information Services Quarterly

Library Director, Gentry Holbert, and Head of Technical Services, Janie Mathews, have co-authored an article in the prestigious journal Information Standards Quarterly. The article, entitled, “OCLC’s Worldshare Management: Early adopter experience at a small liberal arts institution on the Web,” discusses Burke Library’s experiences as early users of the OCLC integrated library system, Worldshare Management.

Burke Acquires ebrary’s Academic Complete Collection

The library is pleased to announce its subscription to the ebrary Academic Complete Collection, which offers more than 79,000 ebook titles in a diverse range of subject areas. The collection is available through the library catalog, and by going to the direct link here.

The ebooks can be viewed using a computer screen, or by downloading the ebrary reader for Android and iPad/iPhone.

Burke Welcomes New & Returning Students with Displays about Mobile’s History

Burke Library welcomes new and returning students with two displays that shed light to the history of Mobile and its numerous attractions. As students and patrons walk into the Library they are greeted with a display incorporating books on the city of Mobile - its history, inhabitants, and southern charm – and photos of historic buildings that serve as examples of the grandiose scale of the architecture in its historic districts. Turning the corner, another display comes into view, introducing observers to the numerous museums and historic sites found in Mobile, as well various activities and events such as historic trails, recurring art walks, and botanical gardens. Check out these displays to learn more about Mobile and the opportunities for exploration within this wonderful city.

Bret Heim named Full Professor

Technical Services Head, Janie Mathews, Attends Course on RDA

In preparation for the 2013 adoption of RDA, the proposed next edition of cataloging rules to replace AACR2 (the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2^nd ed.), SHC Technical Services Librarian Janie Mathews, attended an online seminar called “Introducing RDA 1: Structure, Principles and Core Elements.” RDA will take the place of the traditional cataloging language and structure that currently forms the basis of organization of materials in academic and public libraries in the United States.

SHC Library Intern, Deanna Day, Receives MLIS from USM
