The Jesuit Tradition

People call me “Father Javier” or simply “Javier.” I was born in Arequipa, Peru, on December 03 1939. My primary and secondary studies were at the Jesuits’ “San José” school in Arequipa, where my companions gave me the nick name of “monkey San Martin” which became part of my personality. I began my college studies in the University of San Agustín of Arequipa, but a special call from God made me reorient my career, and I entered into the Society of Jesus in 1939. I did my novitiate and first studies in Lima, Peru, and then I went to Madrid, Spain, for Philosophy studies. I then taught high school in Huancayo and Lima, Peru, from which I went to Toronto, Canada where I spent four wonderful years and obtained the Master in Theology from Regis College. Before returning to Peru, I obtained my Master’s in Education from Boston College, USA, and afterwards, at different times, I undertook specializations and upgrades in Belgium, Brazil and Germany.My priestly ordination was in Arequipa, my native city, in 1959 and I first served as a priest at the Jesuits’ Immaculate Conception high school in Lima. Then I was missioned to Jarpa in Huancayo Peru, and later on to the Diocese of Chachapoyas where I remained eight very fruitful years working mainly with the state teachers, those in formation, in activity and in retirement, work that I continued later on in the National Office of Catholic Education in Lima. After completing 18 years dedicated to the teaching and pastoral work, the Lord guided me to mass media communications ministry. I received a wonderful assignment to the Vatican Radio, in which our Lady played a very important role. I remained there 11 years, during which I could develop my natural talents in communications. After I returned to Peru I received a new mission: Mobile, in Alabama, USA, to work with the hispanic immigrants, a ministry that I am currently involved in. Me llaman “Padre Javier” o simplemente “Javier”. Nací en Arequipa, Perú el 03 de diciembre de 1939. Realicé mis estudios de primaria y secundaria en el Colegio San José de Arequipa de los Padres Jesuitas, en donde me colgaron la chapa de “mono San Martín”, que quedó como parte de mi personalidad. Entré a los estudios superiores en la Universidad de San Agustín de Arequipa, pero un llamado especial de Dios hizo que reorientara mi camino ingresando a la Compañía de Jesús, Jesuitas. Hice mi Noviciado y estudios de Letras en Lima y luego pasé a Madrid, España, para los estudios de Filosofía. Realicé mis prácticas magisteriales en Huancayo y Lima en Perú y luego volé a Toronto, Canadá, en donde pasé cuatro maravillosos años y obtuve el master en Teología. Antes de volver a Perú, saqué el Master en Educación en Boston College, USA y, en diversos momentos, realicé especializaciones y actualizaciones en Bélgica, Brasil y Alemania.Mi ordenación sacerdotal fue en Arequipa, mi ciudad natal, y estrené mi sacerdocio en el Colegio de la Inmaculada en Lima. Luego pasé a Jarpa en Huancayo y después a la Diócesis de Chachapoyas, en donde permanecí ocho fecundos años trabajando especialmente con el magisterio estatal: maestros en formación, en actividad y en retiro, trabajo que luego continué en la Oficina Nacional De Educación Católica en Lima. Luego de completar 18 años dedicados a la pastoral magisterial, el Señor me orientó hacia la pastoral en los Medios de Comunicación. Recibí un hermoso destino, Radio Vaticano, en el cual la Virgen jugó un papel muy importante. Allí permanecí 11 maravillosos años, en los que pude sacar a luz mis inclinaciones naturales hacia los Medios de Comunicación. Cuando regresé a Perú y recibí un nuevo destino: Mobile, en Alabama, Estados Unidos, para trabajar con los inmigrantes hispanos.
