The following is the uniform policy for the Division of Nursing. Please refer to this policy when purchasing uniforms and supplies for clinical rotations.
STUDENT UNIFORM POLICY
VISITING AGENCY FOR ASSESSMENT PURPOSES:
Students are to wear lab coats with name pins and nice street clothes for patient assignments in hospital settings. No shorts, sweat pants, jeans, leggins, short skirts, tennis shoes, sandals or clogs are to be worn in any clinical facility.
HOSPITAL OR AGENCY WORK AS STUDENT NURSE:
- Regulation white jackets or purple scrub jackets will be worn over regulation white top and purple scrubs with a nametag on the upper left chest. If the jacket is removed during the clinical day, the nametag must be worn on the right side of the scrub top. You must have a SHC nursing patch or embroidered emblem jacket’s upper left arm. The white scrub top will have the purple emblem embroidered on it.
- Shoes must be clean, polished, leather, and all white. Insignias, logos, or other emblems are not acceptable. Birkenstock shoes are acceptable.
- Socks may be white or regulation purple. Plain or white hose may also be worn.
- Hair will be off the collar and not loose around the face. When pulled up, it will be secured with a white or plain barrette. No bows, bands, or large barrettes are to be worn. Simplicity is best.
- A mustache or beard, if any, will be neatly trimmed.
- No jewelry will be worn. The only exceptions are: plain wedding band; one pair of earrings of gold, silver, or white, studs only in the lower earlobe; males may not wear earrings in the clinical setting. Tongue piercing, nose piercing, or other visible body piercing or visible tattoos are not acceptable.
- Avoid use of colognes, body sprays or after-shave lotions that may be offensive to patients. Obviously, do not smoke when caring for patients since the odor lingers and bothers many patients.
- Fingernails must be cut or filed so that the nail does not extend beyond the fingertip. We allow clear, unchipped polish. No artificial nails allowed.
- Students will bring to clinical a watch with a second hand, bandage scissors, stethoscope, a penlight, a pen with black ink, and a small notepad. A PDA is acceptable for information. Other items as suggested by the faculty may be required depending on the clinical site.
- No eating, drinking, or chewing gum allowed in the clinical setting.
- Regulation plain white short sleeve t-shirt with round necks, long sleeve turtleneck or mock turtleneck shirts (with no advertisements of any kind) may be worn with purple scrubs. (There are no exceptions.) A purple or white long sleeved warm up jacket may be worn in the clinical setting.
- No cell phone or beepers are allowed in the clinical area.
ATTIRE FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND COMMUNITY NURSING:
- The regulation white shirt with the Spring Hill emblem will be worn with conservative style khaki pants or skirt. The khaki pants or skirt are to be comfortable, but not tight fitting (Suggested brands: Dockers or Levi). There will be no hip huggers or bell-bottoms. They must not drag the ground or have torn, ragged edges.
- A regulation plain white short sleeve t-shirt may be worn under the other shirt as long as there is nothing written on that shirt.
- Hair will be secured as described above.
- Shoes to be worn with the pants will be comfortable, clean, and polished, and either brown with tan socks or plain hose, or the white all leather. Birkenstock shoes are acceptable. Shoes to be worn with the skirt will be brown with plain hose.
- A brown belt will be worn with those pants and skirts having belt loops.
- Other guidelines as listed above under “Hospital or Agency Work as Student Nurse” are to be followed as well as any specific agency protocol regarding dress code.
- In some areas, the regulation white lab coat with the Spring Hill Nursing Emblem may be worn as indicated by the instructor for warmth, with the name pin. (If the lab coat is removed, the name pin must be worn on the shirt above the emblem. Lab coat and name pin must be worn when going to clinical sites to get assignments, orientation, etc. prior to the actual clinical days.) In some areas, the lab coat is not permitted and a white or navy sweater may then be worn for warmth, with the name pin. NO OTHER COLOR IS PERMITTED. (If the sweater is removed, the name pin must be worn on the shirt above the emblem.)
- The clinical instructor may adjust the above attire to the wearing of the SHC purple scrubs (WITH THE SHC LOGO) as needed depending on the clinical site utilized. In this situation, the clinical attire will be followed as noted in the above section when wearing the purple scrubs.
